Somaliland’s House of Representatives and local councils received a 27-month term extension in late April 2026 when the Guurti approved the measure after the National Electoral Commission cited security risks in Sool, Sanaag, Awdal and SSC regions, widespread drought, and incomplete voter registration as barriers to the original May 2026 date. The extension, longer than the commission’s recommended 10-month delay, shifts the next parliamentary vote into 2028 and leaves the three authorized parties—Waddani, Kulmiye and UCID—with no immediate contest. Traders assign overwhelming probability to no election before 2027 because the constitutional process and institutional decision have locked in the timeline absent a successful legal challenge or sudden security improvement that would allow earlier polling.
