Mark Brown’s commanding position in the Cook Islands prime minister market stems from the Cook Islands Party’s decisive victory in the 12 August 2026 general election, securing 13 of 24 seats outright and additional support from independents to reach a supermajority of 19 seats. This outcome followed the dissolution of parliament in late June and allowed Brown to retain his role as head of government after forming the new administration. Opposition parties fared poorly, with the Democratic Party winning no seats and its leader losing her constituency, while the Cook Islands United Party took four. Trader consensus reflects the scale of this result and the absence of viable immediate challengers under the territory’s Westminster-style system. Rare scenarios that could still alter the outcome include successful legal challenges to seat counts or an unforeseen vacancy before formal confirmation of the new government.
