Abiy Ahmed holds overwhelming trader consensus as Ethiopia's next prime minister due to his Prosperity Party's decisive June 2026 parliamentary election victory, which delivered a supermajority of roughly 438 seats and cleared the path for his formal reselection when the new legislature convenes in October. This outcome aligns with the party's sustained dominance in Ethiopia's parliamentary system, where lawmakers select the prime minister, reinforced by limited opposition participation and security constraints that restricted voting in regions such as Tigray and parts of Amhara. Discussions around potential constitutional shifts toward an executive presidency remain secondary to the immediate parliamentary process. Scenarios that could alter the outlook include abrupt leadership changes, major escalations in ongoing regional conflicts, or unforeseen coalition realignments, though the current institutional control makes such shifts improbable in the near term.
