Recent Canadian CPI prints near 3.0% in July 2026, driven by elevated gasoline prices from Middle East supply disruptions, have kept headline inflation above the Bank of Canada’s 2% target while core measures and inflation excluding gasoline remain anchored near 2.2%. The Bank’s July Monetary Policy Report projects headline inflation easing to around 2.5% in the second half of 2026 as oil prices moderate and refinery margins normalize, with a return to target only in early 2027. Persistent upside risks from ongoing energy volatility and potential tariff-related cost pressures support the market’s heaviest weighting on the 2.5–2.9% annual range, tempered by expectations that excess economic slack and contained second-round effects will limit further acceleration.
