Iranian authorities have repeatedly imposed nationwide internet restrictions, including a near-total blackout from January 8 to late May 2026 lasting 88 days, in response to anti-government protests triggered by economic collapse and currency issues, as well as during the February 2026 U.S.-Israeli strikes. Monitoring data from NetBlocks, Cloudflare, and IODA showed connectivity dropping to 1-4% of normal levels, with mobile, landline, and even satellite services affected alongside the National Information Network. Partial restoration occurred in late May under President Masoud Pezeshkian’s directive, though service remains slow with tiered access, whitelisting for favored users, blocked social platforms, and continued economic costs exceeding $1.8 billion. Trader sentiment on future total blackouts centers on risks of renewed protests, escalation in regional conflicts, or shifts toward a permanent hybrid control model emphasizing the domestic intranet over open international access.
