Abiy Ahmed's commanding position in the market stems from his Prosperity Party's landslide victory in Ethiopia's June 2026 general election, where it secured 438 of 501 contested seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives despite boycotts, insecurity, and low opposition participation in regions like Tigray and Amhara. The new parliament is scheduled to convene in October to formally reappoint the prime minister under the country's parliamentary system. Trader consensus reflects Abiy's consolidated control through the ruling party's majority and ongoing economic reform agenda. Potential shifts could arise from active insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, renewed Tigray tensions, or parliamentary consideration of constitutional changes toward an executive presidency, though these face significant institutional barriers given the current seat distribution.
