This market will resolve to “Yes” if Mitch McConnell formally announces an intention to step down or otherwise vacates his U.S. Senate seat before his current term is scheduled to end (January 3, 2027, 11:59 PM ET). Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No.” An announcement will qualify only if it indicates that McConnell will leave office prior to the scheduled end of his term. Statements reaffirming an existing plan to retire at the end of his term will not qualify. The primary resolution sources will be official statements from Mitch McConnell, his office or representatives, and/or official communications from the U.S. Senate or government.**Mitch McConnell’s repeated public commitments to complete his Senate term through January 2027, combined with steady recovery updates after a mid-June 2026 hospitalization, underpin the strong trader consensus against an early resignation.** McConnell, who announced in February 2025 that he would not seek reelection and planned to retire at term’s end, has framed his extended medical absence—stemming from a fall, brief unconsciousness, and mild pneumonia—as a temporary setback requiring intensive physical therapy. He was discharged from rehabilitation in early August 2026 and stated he would continue engaging with staff on Senate business while recovering at home. As of early September 2026, aides and Republican colleagues expressed expectations that he could return when the Senate reconvenes around September 14. Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear has pressed for health disclosures or resignation amid the prolonged absence, yet McConnell’s office has provided no signals of stepping aside. Kentucky’s vacancy rules would likely trigger a special election rather than a gubernatorial appointment, adding procedural complexity without evidence of imminent action. These factors—explicit retirement timeline statements, documented rehabilitation progress, and absence of contrary announcements—explain the elevated implied probability that McConnell will serve out his term.
