Ukraine’s civil airspace has remained closed to commercial flights since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, with Boryspil Airport maintained in operational readiness but inactive for passenger or cargo services. Recent Russian drone strikes on September 5, 2026, directly targeted Boryspil and Kyiv’s Zhuliany airports, which Ukrainian officials linked to discussions about possible U.S. envoy flights amid ongoing peace talks. These attacks underscore persistent risks from missile and drone threats that block airspace reopening. Government working groups have prepared phased resumption plans, with infrastructure assessments showing Boryspil ready for quick reactivation once security conditions permit, yet any flights depend on de-escalation or formal ceasefire agreements. Diplomatic developments and battlefield dynamics in the coming weeks will shape trader views on near-term operational viability.
