Recent South Korean CPI prints, including the 3.1% year-over-year reading for August 2026 driven by elevated petroleum prices and base effects from prior telecom discounts, have lifted trader-implied odds for a full-year average above 3.0% to 31.1%. The Bank of Korea’s back-to-back 25-basis-point hikes to a 3% policy rate, alongside upward revisions to 2026 growth and core inflation forecasts amid semiconductor-led demand and lingering Middle East energy pressures, reinforce expectations for sticky price pressures. Core inflation accelerating to 3.4% highlights broadening underlying momentum beyond transitory factors. With outcomes in the 2.4–2.9% range collectively holding substantial probability, markets reflect uncertainty over whether fiscal caps, fading base effects, and gradual oil-price normalization will pull the annual figure back toward the 2% target or sustain it near recent highs through year-end.
