**Ongoing US-Canada trade tensions and security coordination continue to shape direct leader engagement between President Trump and Prime Minister Carney.** Carney assumed office in March 2025 and the two have held multiple phone calls and in-person meetings since, covering tariffs, CUSMA modernization, NATO spending, Arctic defense, Iran, and bilateral economic issues. Recent developments include stalled trade talks and new US tariffs in August-September 2026, prompting several high-level calls even as public rhetoric sharpened. Carney has signaled openness to resuming negotiations once positions align, while Trump has emphasized reciprocity. Scheduled events such as potential follow-up summits or deadline-driven trade reviews could prompt additional contact, with traders monitoring statements from both capitals for signs of renewed dialogue.
