Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have maintained regular contact through phone calls and in-person discussions on trade negotiations, tariffs, security cooperation, and regional issues including NATO and the Middle East. Multiple calls occurred in August 2026 ahead of U.S. tariff deadlines affecting Canadian exports, with further exchanges noted into September amid stalled talks and public statements from both sides on renegotiating elements of the USMCA framework. Carney has described recent conversations as constructive while emphasizing Canada's readiness to resume formal negotiations, and Trump has referenced ongoing bilateral engagement in public remarks. Scheduled diplomatic events and any new tariff announcements within the market's resolution window remain key variables that could prompt additional outreach.
