Strong El Niño conditions, expected to intensify through the Atlantic peak months, are driving the 93.6% market-implied odds against a Category 5 landfall in the US before 2027 by elevating vertical wind shear and suppressing tropical cyclone intensification on the Saffir-Simpson scale. NOAA and Colorado State University forecasts project a below-normal 2026 season with only 0–2 major (Category 3–5) hurricanes overall and roughly 24% odds of any major US landfall—well below the long-term average—consistent with current low activity levels and just one weak tropical storm landfall to date. Trader consensus reflects these model runs and climatological rarity of Category 5 strikes. Late-season shifts in steering or unexpected El Niño weakening could still permit rapid intensification and a Gulf or East Coast landfall, though such outcomes remain low-probability given ongoing monitoring by the National Hurricane Center.
