This market will resolve to “Yes” if either the United States federal government formally declares a national emergency, an extraordinary emergency, or uses another emergency authority to declare a national crisis in response to a screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) outbreak in U.S. livestock by the specified date at 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Statements, speeches, social media posts, draft orders, executive orders that do not formally declare an emergency will not qualify. Renewals or extensions of previously existing national emergencies will not qualify unless the text is materially modified to explicitly relate to screwworm. The primary resolution source will be the Federal Register and official publications of the White House, Department of Agriculture, Secretary of Agriculture, or other federal departments or agencies, however a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.**New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) larvae cause myiasis by feeding on living tissue of warm-blooded animals, leading to severe wounds and economic losses.** The parasite was eradicated from the US in the 1960s via sterile insect technique but resurged northward from Central America and Mexico, with the first US confirmation in a Zavala County, Texas calf on June 3, 2026. USDA APHIS reports dozens of subsequent animal detections (primarily Texas and New Mexico) through late summer 2026, alongside ongoing cases in Mexican border states. Control relies on intensified sterile fly releases (tens of millions weekly from new Texas and Mexican facilities), enhanced trapping/surveillance (drones, trail cameras, >8,000 traps), quarantines, and movement controls. CDC notes very low public health risk with no locally acquired US human cases; FDA has issued multiple emergency use authorizations for treatments since the August 2025 HHS determination of significant potential for a public health emergency. Texas issued state disaster proclamations in 2026. Key upcoming factors include updated USDA surveillance data, sterile fly production capacity, port reopening decisions, and any model shifts in spread risk. Trader sentiment reflects the contained but active response versus potential for broader federal action if detections increase.
