Recent August CPI data showing a rebound to 3.1% year-over-year, driven by base effects from prior telecom discounts and elevated core inflation at 3.4%, has lifted trader-implied odds for a 3.0%+ full-year 2026 average. Persistent service price pressures, higher petroleum costs, and demand-side factors amid economic recovery have offset government fuel caps and fiscal measures, keeping underlying inflation above the Bank of Korea’s 2% target since March. With the BOK delivering back-to-back 25-basis-point hikes to 2.75% and signaling vigilance, market pricing balances these upside risks against expectations for moderation in coming months. Key catalysts include the September CPI release and further monetary policy decisions that could influence the annual average path.
