The Black Ball has surged to frontrunner status in the early 2027 Best International Feature race, backed by its Best Director prize at Cannes, strong critical consensus, and Netflix’s aggressive campaign push for the Spanish-language epic about gay men across wartime eras. Trader sentiment reflects Spain’s competitive shortlist—now narrowed to The Black Ball, The Beloved, and Sundays—with a final national pick due mid-September. Romania’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord, featuring Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, sits as the clearest alternative after its unanimous selection, while titles like All of a Sudden, Coward, and Possible Love remain longer shots pending full submissions by month’s end. The Academy’s 15-film shortlist arrives December 15, after which guild and critics’ nods will shape momentum toward the January nominees.
