This market will resolve to "Yes" if Clarence Thomas announces that he will retire from his position as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States by the specified date at 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". The announced timing of his retirement may be immediate, at the end of the current Supreme Court term, or at any point in the future. Any qualifying announcement from Thomas will count for a "Yes" resolution, regardless of whether the announced retirement goes into effect. The resolution source for this market will be official announcements from Thomas or one of his official representatives.Justice Clarence Thomas, the Supreme Court’s longest-serving member at age 78, has given no public indication of retirement plans as of early September 2026. Sources close to both Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito stated in April that neither intends to step down during the current term, and Alito explicitly confirmed in an August Wall Street Journal interview that he is staying for at least another term beginning in October. Speculation has centered on strategic timing during President Trump’s term and Republican Senate control ahead of the November 2026 midterms, when Democrats could gain leverage over confirmations. Thomas has approached historical tenure records without signaling departure, consistent with past comments rejecting near-term retirement. Any announcement would trigger Senate confirmation of a replacement, potentially preserving the 6-3 conservative majority depending on electoral outcomes.
