This market will resolve to "Yes" if the CDC identifies a new COVID variant of concern between December 1, 2025, and December 31, 2026, 11:59PM ET. Otherwise this market will resolve to "No". The CDC's variant classification scheme can be found here: https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/107682. The resolution source for this market will be official information from the CDC.Trader consensus on a low likelihood of a new COVID variant of concern before 2027 reflects sustained surveillance data showing that dominant SARS-CoV-2 lineages, including JN.1 descendants such as XFG and NB.1.8.1, exhibit immune escape and transmissibility advantages but no increase in disease severity. As of late summer 2026, the WHO continues to classify only JN.1 as a variant of interest and several others as variants under monitoring, with global hospitalizations and deaths remaining far below prior peaks due to widespread immunity and updated vaccines. The FDA recently approved 2026-27 formulations targeting XFG to maintain protection against circulating strains. While ongoing viral evolution and regional surges could prompt reclassification if severity indicators rise sharply, current evidence supports limited public health impact through 2027.
