US federal investigations into Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s alleged ties to drug traffickers, including possible campaign donations and meetings with traffickers, remain the central driver of trader sentiment on whether he will face US charges by year-end. Probes by Manhattan and Brooklyn prosecutors, with DEA involvement naming him a priority target, surfaced publicly in March 2026 and are described as early-stage, with no indictments issued despite sanctions imposed by the US Treasury’s OFAC in October 2025. Petro has denied all claims, released bank records, and faced related scrutiny over his son’s separate Colombian money-laundering case tied to campaign funds. Strained US-Colombia relations under the Trump administration, travel restrictions linked to sanctions lists, and Petro’s exit from office in August 2026 add uncertainty, as do the absence of confirmed charges to date and potential for further developments before the December 31 resolution window. Current market pricing reflects this balance of ongoing inquiries against procedural and evidentiary hurdles.
