Atlético Madrid enters the 2026-27 LaLiga campaign as the clear market leader for third place due to its established squad depth, Diego Simeone’s long-term tactical stability, and pre-season projections from models like Opta that placed the club well ahead of other contenders for the final Champions League spot. Barcelona and Real Madrid are widely expected to claim the top two positions, leaving Atlético to battle challengers including Villarreal, Real Betis, and Athletic Bilbao. Early-season results show Barcelona and Madrid atop the table while Atlético sits seventh after four matches, though the Julián Álvarez transfer saga—marked by persistent Barcelona interest and fan discontent—remains a key uncertainty. Recent signings such as Lee Kang-in and Cristian Romero aim to bolster attacking options and defensive options ahead of a congested schedule.
