The Bank of Japan's September 17-18 policy meeting carries a 97.8% market-implied probability of a 25 basis point rate increase to 1.25%, driven by Governor Kazuo Ueda's recent signals that the board will debate further tightening amid upside inflation risks from Middle East energy pressures, yen weakness near 160 per dollar, and AI-driven demand. Officials view underlying CPI as approaching the 2% target sustainably, with the June hike to 1% leaving financial conditions accommodative. Recent Reuters and Bloomberg reporting indicates a preference for a measured quarter-point move rather than 50 basis points, consistent with the sub-1% odds on larger adjustments. The meeting itself remains the key near-term catalyst, though last-minute data or communications could still shift positioning.
